I just finished the book, Think Smart: A Neuroscientist’s Prescription for Improving Your Brain’s Performance by Richard Restak, M.D.  It was an easy to read, practical and extremely informative book which left me with a variety of tools to try out to increase my brain fitness.

Dr. Restak poses the question: ““What should I do to keep my brain working at its best?”  In reading this book you will discover there is no one easy answer.  The author reinforces the value first and foremost of good nutrition and exercise, the brain IS an organ of the body after all.

The book gives specific examples of how to improve brain performance,  build a more powerful brain using technology, and how to  fashion a more creative brain.  Dr. Restak is reassuring in his exhortations that the brain can successfully fight neurological decline, it is not too late to start.

Some specific ways to help your brain include:

  • Increase your capacity for sustained attention and concentration…resist the pressure to multi-task.
  • Increase you hand and finger dexterity…play Jenga.
  • Spend less time watching television.
  • Develop an appreciation for art.
  • Try to induce positive moods in yourself.  Use music to elevate your mood.
